canoeing in ohio
It is a five year old too young to go canoeing?

While my husband was on vacation, we are looking for new things to do with 4 children 13 and younger. We have already seen Cosi and the county fair, I'm looking for something more about the connection to nature. I will not go very far, stay here in Ohio, but my husband thinks the kids are too young to be in a canoe? Is this safe family activity? I have fond memories of this when I was young.

Take them out !!!!! To many people sit around watching other people live their life on TV when you could be out to live your own! Canoeing on a lake, river or stream, with little or no current should be fine as long as you can swim safely all. Always wear a PFD. (Not a law at all places you should be, simply the best idea). If you are in shallow water rocky consider helmets and teach children what to do if the return. A body of water with little traffic or motor boats would be best. Just get out there! Be safe, be careful, behave, do not do anything illegal, immoral, unethical or just plain stupid and life will be much sweeter.
