Help! I’m terrified of small spaces and have to go potholing in 6 months time!?

I am going on a school trip in six months time to Brecon Beacons in Wales and we are going to do lots of activities like climbing, canoeing etc. One of the activities is potholing. I am terrified of small spaces especially dark ones. I went on another school trip last year and in a mining museum there were man-made tunnels (it had carpet on the bottom and velvet walls but it was very dimly lit) that you could go down and see what it was like. You had to crawl on your hands and knees. I was really scared but i did it. i love heights! i really sont want to go potholing on our trip but i dont know if there are any other choices of activities to do and i dont want to be the only one who doesnt do it. its mainly when people infront stop moving or when im lower than my hands and knees i can barely breathe. Can someone either reassure me that potholing isnt that bad, or tell me how to overcome my minor claustraphobia? thank you so much

I’ve never been potholing but since you are determined to go ahead with this trek then you had better prepare for some dark and small areas. You could go into your cupboard for an hour or two and pretend it is a “pothole. You could build a tunnel of sorts out of cardboard boxes and crawl through them.

Since you didn’t have a panic attack at the mining museum, I think your fear is more about the unknown rather than claustrophobia. If you really had claustrophobia, you would have run out of the museum screaming in terror.
