Swellendam, third oldest town in South Africa is situated at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains and has much to offer visitors who have an interest in history, nature, outdoor activities and art. Swellendam is ideally situated halfway between Cape Town and George, and is therefore an ideal stop for tourists. Swellendam has been an important center of travel for centuries. Early travelers and explorers traded with the Khoi-Khoi and in 1743 the Dutch East India Company declared Swellendam magisterial district and built the Drostdy which was completed in 1747. This Drostdy, a national monument, is the only Drostdy eighteenth century preserved in its original form and will give tourists a wonderful idea for the life of the settlers.
The more tourism adventures can happen on the rise Swellendam. Located in and around of the Marloth Nature Reserve this path is one of the most beautiful Cape. There are many shorter routes, if a six-day walk is too long to you. On this tour you will see stretches of fynbos interspersed with fresh native forest, small animals and birds. Other sections of the track will give you the feeling of being in a quiet and secluded wilderness. The six days of trekking demands a medium to high level of fitness and is not recommended for heart light. Marloth Nature Reserve is also one of the best birding spots in the Western Cape, challenging and therefore worth a visit.
The rare and beautiful Bontebok antelope and other species small deer can be seen at the Bontebok National Park. This park is only 6 km from Swellendam. A total of 126 different bird species have also been identified here. A charming caravan park on the banks of the Breede River where they also have fully equipped chalets for hire and where day visitors are welcome to swim, fish or picnic.
Apart from the adventure tours in the heart can also enjoy a day or two out of river rafting. River rafting adventure Breede is a 2.5 hour drive from Cape Town. In this adventure you will enjoy your two-day rowing man Mohawk canoes in the calm waters of the Breede and socialization nights around a campfire. Up to the Camp Creek is located near Swellendam on a hill overlooking the river, where accommodation is a framework or chalets of 3 bullock carts. This accommodation includes comfortable beds with sheets and duvets. However, this adventure will be well worth trying and is ideal for a family to enjoy together.
Youngberry tasting can be done at the dam Buffeljags. This wild berry crop was imported to South Africa in 1939 by Professor OSH Reinecke. The industry is sadly in decline due to many problems associated with wind and rain damage or extreme heat, pest attacks and insufficient manpower for the peak harvest period from mid – November to early December. Today over 90% of the total annual harvest of just over 600 tonnes is produced by farmers in the Swellendam area. During his visit to the Hermitage Liqueur Farm just 3 km from the city you can sample some of the liquor youngberries. Other products Youngberry also for sale here.
