Canoes and kayaks have been used to cross rivers, lakes and even oceans for thousands of years. Kayaks are first used by the Inuit people of northern Arctic regions around the North Atlantic, the Arctic Ocean, the Bering Sea and North Pacific. The term literally translates into "hunter boat."
