Newaygo County was named Chippewa Indian Chief: Naw-wa-Goo, who signed the Treaty of Saginaw in 1812. The county has more than 230 natural lakes and more than 350 miles of rivers and streams. Three large dams were built after the turn of the century: Croton, Hardy and Newaygo. Croton and Hardy Dams remain today, with the largest dam Hardy of land east of the Mississippi.
The Muskegon River is still the main attraction for summer cottage residents and fishermen, who find it nearly the best rainbow fountain in the spring and fall salmon anywhere in Michigan. Hiking is excellent, more than half the county is located in the Manistee National Forest.

The Loda Lake Wildflower Sanctuary finds its origins in 1938 when the U.S. Forest Service invited the Federated Garden Club of Michigan to participate in creating a sanctuary for native plants of Michigan. The area consists of a small lake, an area of swamps and forests. There are over 150 different species of plants, wildflowers, trees and vegetation marked positions corresponding to the route guide available. The trail is about 1.5 miles long. A picnic area with grills and an outhouse is available for use by the walk. The sanctuary is located about 7 miles north of White Cloud. To the north of White Cloud M-37 and turn west on 5 Mile Road, then turn north on Felch Avenue and follow until you see the sign below. The entrance is directly opposite the signal.
The Hardy Dam Rustic Nature Trail is a cooperative project of the Boy Scouts of America and consumers of energy used. The trail is three miles round trip along the Muskegon River. The road is unpaved and winds of more and different types of terrain. Be sure to bring a good pair of hiking boots securely attached as the path of the wind in some places along the sides of some very steep hills. We also identified 26 species of trees along the route, identified post so be sure to pick up your trail guide to the trailhead. Parking is available near the Hardy Dam, in the extreme northwest.
The Way of wetlands is 1.25 miles walk through a sphagnum bog. The project cost more than $ 30,000 and was funded by the Fremont Area Foundation. In parts of the sphagnum is as much as 40 feet deep, very unusual. The area is full of wildlife such as great blue herons, kingfishers, owls, turtles and muskrats. El Camino is on the east side of Pickerel Lake at Camp Newaygo. The road is free and open to the public.
Natural Areas Coolbough is a 400-acre property in the municipality of Brooks and managed jointly with The Nature Conservancy. Habitat diversity is a characteristic of the Areas Natural Coolbough that makes every visit an exciting trip. Visitors have the opportunity to explore the ponds and wetlands, hike through white pine forest white oak, the search for butterflies and wildflowers on the prairie remnants and moors, and listening to the murmur of the waters and streams Coolbough Bigelow. Allowed hunting deer in the reserve to reduce a deer population too high in the area and reduce threats too many deer pose to our conservation objectives. The reserve has an extensive trail system with horseback riding on designated trails permitted. Bring your binoculars for spectacular views of wildlife. Location of Newaygo, take M-37 to Croton Drive (at the intersection immediately north of the Muskegon River). Turn east on Croton and go 3.7 miles to Barberry Avenue. Turn north and by a mile, barberry end on 58th Street. Turn east (right) at the 58th meeting, which curves north to become Hazelwood. Parking is at the corner of 58th and Hazelwood.
